10 Fun Facts About Jameson Black Barrel

Jameson’s history began in the 1770s, when its founder, John Jameson, a lawyer, decided to pursue his dream of investing in the Irish whiskey business. Now, the Jameson brand is a reputable leader in Ireland’s foremost distilleries. Jameson is now known as the most popular Irish whiskey distillery. The 250-year-old brand holds a whopping 79% of Ireland’s market value share and is largely credited with propelling Irish whiskey to the top ranks.

Despite Jameson’s enviable reputation, the distillery is not leaving any room for complacency. Rather, they continue to evolve and innovate sustainable distilling, blending, and charring methods to add flavour, depth, and intensity to their range of smooth, rich, quality whiskies.

Jameson Black Barrel is one of the newest additions to the Jameson range. It’s a masterful, rich, and smooth whiskey exclusively produced for distinguished whiskey lovers. Let’s highlight some fun facts about this genius Irish whiskey.

  1. Jameson Black Barrel was previously labeled as “Select Reserve”.
  2. Jameson Black Barrel is a triple-distilled Irish Whiskey. While most whiskeys are only distilled twice, Jameson is known for distilling their whiskies three times for exceptional smoothness, depth, purity, and flavour.
  3. Black Barrel gains its name from the twice-charred bourbon barrels it’s aged in. According to Jameson, charring is an age-old method for invigorating barrels to intensify the taste. After being triple distilled, Jameson Black Barrel ages in oak (bourbon) barrels that have been painstakingly charred twice, (not once, as is known in other spirits) by the distillery’s expert coopers.
  4. Jameson Black Barrel has intense flavours, and extra richness, and unusual complexity. The highly-decorated Irish whiskey’s exceptionally rich flavours are coaxed out of the wood barrels.
  5. Although you can always enjoy Jameson Black Barrel neat with a touch of water or on the rocks, it’s also a pleasurable drink when you serve it in many classic whiskey cocktails.
  6. Black Barrel has sweetened, caramelized flavours of butterscotch and vanilla. The time spent maturing in the oak barrels gives Jameson Black Barrel its intensified aromas of butterscotch, fudge, and creamy toffee.
  7. Jameson Black Barrel has an abundant nutty nose on the palate. Nutty notes are in abundance alongside the smooth sweetness of spice, dried fruits, mixed peel, apricots, marshmallows, and burnt caramel. The palate ends with a spicy, bitter chocolate finish.
  8. Black Barrel has a deep golden colour with copper tinges. The premium whiskey offers richness and intensity of toasted wood and vanilla as an aftertaste.
  9. Black Barrel is produced by Jameson’s Midleton Distillery. Blended from grain and pot still whiskeys, the 70-centiliter, 40% ABV whiskey is a product of locally sourced barley subjected to completely sustainable and totally eco-friendly distilling methods.
  10. Jameson Black Barrel has received a tonne of notable awards. Some of Black Barrel’s reputable accolades include Irish Whiskey Awards Gold Medal, Blends (Under €60) (2016), Gold Medal - Blends (Under €60) (2017), Winner- Blends under €60 (2019), Gold - Irish Whiskey Masters – (2021) World Whiskey Awards (2021) - Silver – Blended.
