Where Is Remy Martin from and What’s Its History?
If you’ve ever wondered how the Remy Martin brand came to be, then you are in luck, because I’ll be letting you know everything from its origins to its current status in the cognac world today.
The Remy Martin brand is named after the founder who was born in southwestern France in 1695. He created a cognac trading house in 1724 and it was passed on to Paul-Emile-Rémy Martin, his grandson in 1773 after he died.
In 1810, he took the Remy Martin cognacs into Asia, the Pacific, and the United States of America. Being an astronomer, Remy Martin then added a centaur as the logo, as it was his star sign – Sagittarius.
André Renaud, a merchant, and lawyer became the first Cellar Master of the house in 1924 and later on became the chairman. In 1927, the Rémy Martin Fine Champagne Cognac VSOP was launched and was a success due to its superior quality.
Having the Cognac Fine Champagne appellation means that Remy Martin cognac is only made from Grande Champagne crus (at least 50%) and Petite Champagne. When André Renaud died in 1965, his son-in-law, André Hériard Dubreuil took over as president and the company experienced tremendous growth under his leadership during which he launched a partnership with winegrowers that ensured that he produced the highest quality products.
The Remy Martin house has achieved more than the environmental goals they initially set as half of their partners’ winegrowing areas are HVE certified and all their partners are dedicated to sustainable winegrowing.
So when next you grab a bottle of Remy Martin, remember this rich history and great dedication to superior quality and customer satisfaction. Raise a glass to Remy Martin.
