Is Moet A Good Champagne?

Established in 1743 by Claude Moet, Maison Moet is the largest Champagne house in the world. Re-christened Moet & Chandon in 1832, after Victor Moet, Claude Moet’s great-grandson took over the company and went into partnership with his brother-in-law, Pierre-Gabriel Chandon de Briailles. Over a century later, the Champagne House also merged with Hennessy Cognac in 1971 and subsequently with Louis Vuitton in 1987 to become LVMH (Louis-Vuitton-Moet-Hennessy) luxury group. Presently, Moet Chandon is the world’s best-selling Champagne by a large margin!

Now comes the million-dollar question, is Moet a good champagne?

Simple answer: it is!

You don’t become the biggest champagne brand in the world overnight by producing substandard wines.

Did you know: every second around the globe, a bottle of Moet and Chandon Champagne is opened? That’s 3,600 bottles every hour and 86,400 bottles a day!

With a widely-recognized range of luxurious champagnes, including its flagship Moet Brut Imperial, Rose Imperial, Ice Imperial, Rose Ice Imperial, and the Grand Vintage Champagnes, Moet & Chandon produces about 26 million bottles annually!

The House’s signature style, found in Moet Brut Imperial, is known for its luxurious fruitiness, seductive palate, and exotic elegance. Created in 1869, Moet Imperial has fleshy soft fruit notes mixing with delicately nutty cereal notes, all enmeshed in heaven’s own bubble wrap, the Champagne “pearl” carbonation.

The blend is created from over 100 different Eaux-de-vie (wines), of which 20%-30% are reserve wines (wines kept at the winery for a few years to mature before blending). 30%-40% Pinot Noir, 30%-40% Pinot Meunier, and 20%-30% Chardonnay are the three typical Champagne grape varieties used to achieve the required balance. The dosage (added sugar at bottling) is at a standard level for the Brut category, 9 g/litre.

The Brut Imperial’s ageing in bottle, on its lees providing depth and complexity, is moderately short at 24 months (while the minimum by law is 18 months).

Moet & Chandon is the wine for the regal. The House’s sparkling wine was French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte’s favourite bubbly. What’s more? The company holds a Royal Warrant to supply Queen Elizabeth II with Champagne.

Now, how’s that for quality assurance?
