Which is Better: Jameson vs Tullamore Dew

A comparison of two top whiskeys from the same Irish origin is made here to put side-by-side their qualities, history, production process, materials used, taste, varieties, alcohol by volume percentage, and retail cost of both. Jameson is the top-selling Irish whiskey, while Tullamore DEW comes not far behind it. The start of Jameson could be traced back to the year 1780, while the Tullamore DEW distillery was founded in 1829.

For this comparison, the standard Jameson is used.

Price: Jameson Irish Whiskey is a bit more expensive than the Tullamore DEW Irish Whiskey. While the former goes for around 10,650 for a 70CL bottle, the latter is sold for  6000 or less for a 70 CL bottle.

ABV: They have equal alcohol by volume percentage – 43%.

Color: Depending on your color preference, Tullamore DEW is light amber in color, while Jameson has a golden color.

Nose: Jameson’s nose is a mix of freshly baked banana bread and tropical fruit with bits of spicy wood and caramel. It is complex and delicious. Tullamore is a mix of vanilla and caramel with hints of fresh flowers and citrus with subtropical fruit. It has faint hints of spice, moss, and wood in the background, dominating the nose after added water.

Distillation and Mash: both blended Irish whiskey; Tullamore DEW is triple blended from three types of Irish whiskey - malt, grain, and pot still, while Jameson is blended from two kinds of Irish whiskey – grain and pot still. Both of them are triple distilled before their blending.

Taste: we compare their aroma, palate, and finish. Jameson has pepper and oak with floral aroma, while Tullamore DEW tasting notes have their aroma as citrus and caramel with light wood notes. The former’s palate has nutty vanilla flavors and spice, while the latter palate is slightly sweet with some citrus flavors. The Tullamore DEW has a honey and toffee finish with medium length, while for Jameson, it is a spicy oak finish mellowed by honey and vanilla.

Taste is one significant factor that can swing the personal preferences of individuals. It is down to what each person likes. Summarily, Jameson’s taste is epitomized by its nuttiness and spice; it has a quite prominent flavor, although light. On the other hand, Tullamore DEW is a bit sweeter, and the caramel and toffee notes are more pronounced; it also carries a light citrus flavor.
