How Grey Goose Vodka Is Made

GREY GOOSE is a world-class brand of vodka produced in France. Business magnate Sidney Frank developed the idea and founded the production company Sidney Frank Importing Co (SFIC) in 1997. Frank launched GREY GOOSE with the mission to develop a luxury vodka to appeal to American consumers.

With GREY GOOSE’s Maître de Chais and veteran cognac Cellar Master François Thibault — who developed the vodka’s original recipe in Cognac, France — the brand eventually became a leader in the vodka industry. In 1998, GREY GOOSE was awarded the world’s best-tasting vodka by the Beverage Testing Institute. GREY GOOSE released its first flavour L’Orange in 2001 and Le Citron in 2002. Frank eventually sold the GREY GOOSE brand to Bacardi Limited for a reported amount of US$2.2 billion in 2004.

How is GREY GOOSE vodka made?

Free of additives, GREY GOOSE vodka is made from two premium, locally-sourced ingredients: soft winter wheat is grown in Picardy, France, and natural spring water. The soft winter (low-protein, “superior bread-making”) wheat used in GREY GOOSE is planted in October and harvested in August — giving it four extra months to grow in comparison to summer wheat. The water used in the vodka is sourced from a natural spring flowing about 150 meters (500 feet) below the blending facility in Cognac, which is lined with limestone, providing calcium-rich spring water. This natural water is then filtered in the distillery to remove all impurities.

GREY GOOSE is distilled once through a five-column distillation process it is moved to a bottling facility in the Cognac region. Once the wheat is distilled, the distillate is then blended with the purified, limestone-filtered spring water from Gensac-la-Pallue. This premium mixture is then bottled in the company’s distinctive smoked glass bottle, featuring French geese in flight, and delivered in wooden crates similar to wine. GREY GOOSE vodka is bottled with a replaceable cork rather than a screw-top cap.

GREY GOOSE comes in its original form as well as various Strawberry & Lemongrass, Watermelon & Basil, and many more. All variants of GREY GOOSE vodka (including its different flavours) are bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (ABV, 80 proof).
